Route 114, nine-tenths of a mile from the South Ferry.

Mashomack Preserve, which is owned and maintained by the Nature Conservancy, encompasses 2,039 acres and is clearly the jewel of Shelter Island. Twenty-two miles of scenic hiking trails wind through varied terrain that includes hardwood forests, upland meadows, salt marshes and breathtaking water views. Walk to the historic Nicoll family graveyard or the 1890s manor house. Wildlife abounds, and more than 200 species of birds have been recorded on the preserve. It is one of the largest undeveloped properties remaining on Long Island.

Guided nature and bird walks are scheduled throughout the year, and special children’s programs are offered in summer.
